GHBT- 'The House on Sunset' by Lindsay Fischer Tour- Top 5

The House on Sunset
By-  Lindsay Fischer
Genre- Memoir/Women’s Fiction

Lindsay Fischer was once a high school English teacher with dreams stretching far outside the classroom. When her boyfriend of a year-and-a-half cheated on her, Lindsay found herself alone, looking online for a replacement. His name was Mike.

That’s where the nightmare started.

The House on Sunset is a memoir, a collection of reminiscences, scattering the ashes of two broken homes and putting them to rest. Each chapter offers a different glimpse inside the cycle of intimate partner violence, where honeymoon phases and traumas coexist.

Everyone could fall victim to abusers. This book bravely displays the reasons a quirky, twenty-something teacher would, and did.

Lindsay Fischer's Top 5 Bands/Artists

5. Hozier

Dangerously listed here (as I’ve known of their music for much less time than most of the others). I love how versatile their songs/lyrics are. I first heard “Take me to Church” on my honeymoon in Hawaii last June, months before the hit ever made its way to Missouri. I’ve been obsessed ever since.

4. Carly Simon

My mom and dad both loved her so -again - this is about nostalgia. I remember singing “You’re so Vain” before I understood what the lyrics were about. I loved the rhythm, the smooth coolness of her voice and the escapism hearing her songs provides.

3. Incubus

Brandon Boyd is so, so admirable in his talent (on and off the stage). I have a book of his scribblings and poetry that I adore. Beyond that my love for the band began with “Stellar” and grew from there. “Here in my room,” and “Pardon Me” are two other songs I love. No matter how I’m feeling, the edge in the music allows me to vent or celebrate or stand in my own strength. Beyond that, I think Brandon Boyd is incredibly attractive (hello, tattoos).

2. Janis Joplin

A role model in being unapologetically yourself. Her bravery and passion inspire me still (yes, even with her downfall). My dad used to sing us “Mercedes Benz” when we were younger. I didn’t know who Janis Joplin was at the time, but I could sing the song word for word. After I saw her picture and listened to a few other songs, I knew we were soul sisters (without the addiction).

1. Nirvana

I don’t know how to wrap words around my love for Kurt Cobain and this band. Maybe I’m just a sucker for people with tragic endings, but the unapologetic honesty of their music makes me feel unstoppable and brave.
