Welcome Erik Scott de Bie to the blog! He's here to discuss his writing process!

Writing is a kind of telepathy. I take a story from my head (and heart and soul) and cram it onto a page like an overloaded psychic trap, in the hopes that some unsuspecting rube will come along and open to that first page and BAM. We’re connected, you and I.

How do I do this? Well, it all starts with story--something I want to tell and (hopefully) you want to read.

For me, the story usually begins with a scene. Two desperate fighters struggling at the height of an abandoned clock tower. The hero running across a bridge, which starts exploding when she’s in the middle of it. An explorer trying desperately to get through a maze gradually filling with putrid water.

Character emerge from that image. I need a beat-up hero and a vicious villain for my climactic fight up on the precipice. I ask myself what their skills would have to be to bring them here: how did they get up this high? What kind of fight is it--acrobatics or brawn, elegance or raw battle?

And I ask myself why they are fighting. The answer can never be as simple as “this one’s good, this one’s evil.” I like to deal in moral ambiguity, even in my fantasy writing (which as a genre tends to be defined by pretty clear divisions of light and dark). One character might want a thing, but it’s usually better if their motivations are more personal. The villain wants to prove himself in battle against the hero, so he has kidnapped one of the hero’s loved ones as bait.

That gives me plot ideas as well as characters, and I start creating more scenes around that centerpiece. It may change radically in the process, and that’s a good thing: the whole work needs to evolve to match itself. I don’t want to write a book with one stand-out scene--I want to write a book that transitions seamlessly between powerful moments and quiet ones, breathing space and climaxes. One that builds and builds and eventually pays off in a major way.

And once I know the story, it’s really all about putting the words down on paper. Transposing what’s in my head onto the page so that when you read it, you’ll see something similar to what I see. Telepathy.

With a few grammatical and literary flourishes along the way, of course.

About the Author-
I am a speculative fiction author, mostly writing fantasy, science fiction, and some mix of the two. I'm probably best known for the Forgotten Realms series SHADOWBANE (the tale of a thief turned vigilante paladin, sworn to a dead god), as well as a growing body of short stories in various anthologies and available for download on the web. (Seriously, check my website, it's pretty awesome.)
I am also a known quantity in the gaming industry, designing for the legendary tabletop RPG Dungeons and Dragons as well as other systems.

When I'm not writing, gaming, or more writing, I compose technical documentation by day and fight injustice by night. I lives in Seattle and am married with pets.
