'Color Blind' by Penny Miller Tour- Top 5

Color Blind
Color Blind # 1
Genre- YA paranormal
By- Penny Miller

All her life Harmony Phillips has felt defective. Growing up in a paranormal community where magikal abilities come from the wavelengths of color, a color blind girl is worthless, and they haven't let her forget it. No one but her adoptive parents, Charlie a Were-Lion and Sarah a Witch, along with her best friend Tesch, a Siren, have ever given her an ounce of esteem. When a fit of outrage unlocks the color yellow to her eyes, Harmony passes out cold with shock over her eggs and accidentally glamours her nemesis Challen Parks into a cowardly golden retriever. As other colors unfold before her eyes, so do new abilities. Love and friendship get turned upside down as Harmony struggles to have faith in people, discovering they are not always as they seem. The misfit becomes the outlaw as she is once again different from everyone else. What began as joy turns to peril when the paranormal Council finds out she is more than a Witch, or a Were or a Fae... oh my.

Penny Miller's Top 5 Top 5 Favorite Books/Series.

Hmmm. Okay. I was earlier asked about Top 5 authors and I listed them based on their series that I have read and never wanted to end.

Laurell K. Hamilton for the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter and Meredith Gentry Series

Robert Asprin for the Myth-Adventure Series

J.K. Rowling for the Harry Potter Series

Bertrice Small for her Skye O’Malley Series

Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis for the Dragonlance Series

However, I’d like to take this chance to offer up some other authors that have written books, usually a single read, that have haunted me, changed me or consumed me. I don’t want to call it a one hit wonder list because these authors have written many other great books and have done what any aspiring author hopes to achieve, make a living at it! But these are books that I discovered somewhere along the road that stayed with me and why.

I nominate…..

Sheri S. Tepper for Beauty -An adult faery tale about the life and times and adventures of Sleeping Beauty. Beauty travels from her time of knights and fair ladies to the lands of Faery. She goes forward in time to see the end of mankind and how we destroy ourselves. She goes back and discovers herself the origin for other great faerytales; Cinderella, Snow White, and the Frog Prince. She is given over as a sacrifice to Hell for seven years and puts a new spin on the phrase ‘hell of your own making’. Sheri Tepper managed to make me earth conscious and socially aware of so much with this book. Her metaphors are powerful and thought provoking to say the least.

Truddi Chase for When Rabbit Howls- First, this book is not for everybody. It is the autobiography of a woman with multiple personality disorder who suffered atrocious physical, sexual and psychological abuse growing up. And it is quite graphic. What made the story different than Sybil or the Three Faces of Eve is that the author(s) had refused to integrate their personalities The functioned as a co-op. It also made me appreciate the suffering that we all face and the indomitable will of the human spirit. To this day, no matter how hard my life may seem at times, I remember this story. I can survive anything, maybe not in one piece, but I will get to the other side. I will go on.

Victoria Holt for My Enemy the Queen- My Momma loved to read Victoria Holt novels. My Momma was one of the hardest working women I have ever known and leisure time for her was precious and infrequent. As a little girl I always wanted to know what she found so fascinating in those books she would spend a few stolen hours with. When I got to be a teenager I swipe one and read it. So began my own love of historical romance as well as a fair knowledge base on the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First. Lord Robert Dudley and Lettice Knollys are documented members of her court. Who says you can’t learn anything from reading smut. (Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha).

Barbara Davis for Suffer The Little Children- When I want a horror story, I don’t have to go to Steven King of John Saul. Albeit those gentlemen are masters at fictional horror, but real horror sadly lies in true crime novels. This book was based on a murderer that lived and killed only 45 short miles away from where I lived. It is one thing to hear about serial killers and such in far away places and big cities like New York and California. That might as well be the moon. Until the events in this book occurred, I lived in a glass house. Evil existed...but somewhere else. This book uncovered the dirty laundry hanging on the line in my own back yard. I haven’t felt the world was safe for my kids since.

Dan Brown for the Davinci Code and Angels and Demons- I know it has been said time and again by countless people, but the books were SO much better than the movies. But what I found so wonderful with these books was the controversy. I live in the heart of the bible belt and I was stunned at the squall these stories caused among the righteous and self-righteous. I admire anyone who can knock people out of their comfort zones with a good story. OMG! It’s fiction people! These books also made me even more determined to make it to Europe someday. I can’t wait to see historical art and masterpieces that have stood the tests of time.

So these are my Top 5 (single) books. You may agree or disagree, but I hope you will take the time to pick one up and find a new page in your own story.

About the Author-
Penny Miller is a born and bred Oklahoman. She has a nursing degree from Eastern  Penny Miller Oklahoma State College and is a Registered Nurse in addition to being an author. Penny wrote her first short story complete with illustrations when she was seven-years-old and has been writing ideas and bits of dialogue ever since. As a child, her mother regularly read to her classic faery tales. It was those stories that ignited her imagination and attraction to the magical and whimsical. With her three children Robert, Amy and Cheyenne, she carried on the tradition of introducing them to fantasy and other worlds through stories. Three years ago, she co-authored erotic romance e-books under the pseudonym Jp Archer. At that time her daughters asked her when she was going to write stories they could read. Penny went to her keyboard and dug in and her debut solo novel, Color Blind, was born. Most importantly, creating a story in the Young
Adult/Paranormal genre is where she found her true voice as a writer. She hopes readers will become fans of her heroine Harmony Phillips and follow her story through the next phases; Colorful and Colorless.
